What is Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)?

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) is government-funded support designed to help students in higher education overcome barriers related to a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition, neurodivergence or Specific Learning Difference (SpLD). DSA is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. It exists to ensure students can access the support, strategies and tools they need to fully engage with their studies.

How the DSA Process Works

1. Apply

You apply for DSA through your student finance body once you’ve accepted your university place. You’ll usually need evidence of your condition or diagnosis.

2. Attend Needs Assessment

If your application is approved, you’ll be invited to a Needs Assessment. This is a supportive conversation (not a test) about:

  • How your condition affects your studies

  • What support might help

  • What tools or strategies work best for you

3. Receive DSA2 Letter

After the assessment, you’ll receive a report outlining recommended support, including NMH services. Once the support is approved by the funding body, you will receive a DSA2 letter.

4. Arrange Your Support

Once funding is confirmed, you can contact Onyx Support to arrange your NMH support. We’ll:

  • Match you with a suitable support worker

  • Discuss your preferences

  • Get your support started as smoothly as possible

How Support Is Delivered

Frequently Asked Questions About DSA

Do I have to pay for DSA support?

No. DSA is not means-tested and does not need to be repaid. If your support is approved, it is funded through your DSA entitlement.

Is DSA the same as student finance?

No. DSA is separate from your tuition fee loan and maintenance loan and does not affect how much student finance you receive.

Can I receive more than one type of support?

Yes. Many students receive multiple forms of support, such as mentoring alongside study skills or assistive technology, depending on what’s recommended in their Needs Assessment Report.

What if my needs change during my course?

Your support can be reviewed and adjusted. If your circumstances change, speak to your support worker or contact us and we’ll guide you through next steps.

Can I keep my support during placements or holidays?

Often, yes — especially if support is delivered remotely. This depends on your funding and circumstances, so it’s best to plan ahead.

What if I’m unsure whether I’m eligible?

That’s okay. If you’re unsure, you can still apply for DSA or speak with your university’s disability team. You can also contact us for guidance.
